Passed: May 05, 2024
Charleston, WV

Miriam Mason Abernethy (“Mim”), 97, of Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2024, in HospiceCare at CAMC, Memorial Division, surrounded by her loving family.

Daughter of the late William S. Mason and Miriam Briggs Mason, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis E. Abernethy, Jr., and her son, Robert J. Abernethy, as well as her four siblings. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Michael Abernethy (Alice) of Charleston; Miriam “Mimi” Deane (Evans) of Pawleys Island, SC; and Sandy Mason Abernethy (Amy Lou) of Seattle, WA, as well as her former daughter-in-law, Renee W. Abernethy of Wexford, PA. Mim is also survived by her grandchildren: Brandie Abernethy, Laura Greer, Colin Abernethy, Rob Deane, Megan Kerr, Christopher J. Abernethy, and Helena Abernethy, as well as five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who supported her with treats, visits, and outings.

Mim spent her childhood in the South Ruffner area, where she and her siblings roamed freely in the nearby hills and on the banks of the Kanawha River.

After high school, she worked for the Charleston Gazette and, in the following years, at various women’s clothing stores, such as Risk’s and The Dandelion.

Among her interests, Mim was deeply engaged in documenting the family’s genealogy. She was also an accomplished seamstress and an artist who loved painting scenes of West Virginia life and lands.

Staying in the Kanawha City area, she and Otis raised their family in the house she occupied nearly 70 years on Granada Way.  Their door was open to all, especially the neighborhood children, many of whom were nieces and nephews. It was a tight community and she was the Duchess of Granada Way. Over the years, the neighborhood changed, family and friends moved away, folks passed on, but she was there like a lighthouse, affixed to that spot, making sure all had safe harbor when needed.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Kanawha Place Assisted Living, where Mim resided her last few years, for their consistent care and their acceptance and appreciation of her sharp wit and feistiness.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV, with a private family interment at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston, to follow.
