Moseley Hubbard Winkler, M.D., 96, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on September 9, 2026, surrounded by family.
He is survived by his four daughters, Kristy Zak (Robert Joseph) of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, Adele Holmes of Charleston, Ann Holbrook (Stephen) of Charleston, and Betsy Willis (John), of Isle of Palms; his nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Clark, Chase Ranson, M.D., Charles Holbrook, Robert Zak, Jr., Barbara Dunmire, Madeline Stull, Drew Holbrook, John Alan Willis, Jr., M.D., and Adele Willis; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Dr. Winkler was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sharon Winkler; his twin brother, Charles P. Winkler, Sr., M.D.; his brother, Robert Winkler; and sister, Betty Roberts.
Dr. Winkler was born July 30, 1930, in Ronceverte, West Virginia. At the young age of seven, he suffered the loss of his father, James L. Winkler, and his mother, Adele L’Artigue Pinckney (Pettijohn) Winkler at age 11. Dr. Winkler and his siblings were taken in by their great-aunt, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hubbard.
In 1949, he attended Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, for the first year of pre-med undergraduate studies before transferring to Marshall University, completing his undergraduate studies in just three years. In 1951, he attended West Virginia University School of Medicine, completing the two-year program, before transferring to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, where he would earn his Doctorate in Medicine. It was during his time in Morgantown where he met his beloved wife, Sharon, on a blind date; they married just three months later and spent the next 69 years devoted to each other until her death in 2023.
After a year-long internship in Charleston, he served as a doctor in the United States Navy until 1957, with the rank of Lieutenant. He would continue to serve in the United States Marine Corps reserves until 1966.
Following his active service in the U. S. Navy, he moved his growing family back to Charleston, where he established a general medical practice until 1966. He relocated his family to Charlottesville, Virginia, to begin his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Virginia. Following his residency, he returned to Charleston and joined the Eye and Ear Clinic as an ophthalmologist in 1969 until he retired in 2000. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Outside of his professional life, he was actively involved in the community. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Charleston. He served as the team doctor for the Charleston High School and Capital High School football teams from 1970 to 2000. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston for over 65 years and proudly served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church.
Above all, he was devoted to his wife, his children and grandchildren.
Moseley’s family express their deep, heartfelt thanks to his caregivers.
