We are the “juice ladies” who gratefully use Trinity Lutheran’s kitchen every Monday morning. James was our friend and valiant helper. He hung our sign, played violin and shot the bull with us every week, among many other things. We named our juice truck after James! He was special, and very much loved and appreciated. He often got our names wrong (for two years)… it became a running joke, but we knew he loved us too. RIP James… Lisa Smith / Amy Smith Mountain Juice WV LLC

  3. James worked with the West Virginia Insititue for SPIRITUALITY for 2 years, played violin for 99 year old Sr. Pellicane each morning at 7:30 am during her weeks of active dying, accompanied me on piano, and frequently played for our retreatants making silent retreats.

In the mornings, James and I talked about God and Jesus…and now he knows for sure.

Most sensitive to my needs, one morning while i was caring for Sr Pellicane, he showed up on the second floor (we had given him a key). Why? I had opened the blinds. He saw that change, and thought I needed help with Sr. Pellicane and had come to my rescue. ‘I thought you signaled me’. I felt so cared for from my ‘brother’ James. I miss him very much James will be buried on Sr. Pellicane’s 6 month anniversary, and sadly, not play for her funeral on the 25th as scheduled. He joined her in heaven, I’m sure.

  4. Uncle James not a day goes by since August 26th when we first heard the news that I do not think about you. As you could imagine Dad took it pretty hard, you were his baby brother! Initially I wondered why you didn’t want us to know, or at least Dad but then I got to remembering who you are and you’re “That James!” You’ve done everything your way including your last days! Remembering you helped ease my worries. You didn’t allow me to say this often to you but I am so proud of who you became in your sober life and I appreciated you even more as I became an adult. I am thankful for you making trips back to Cleveland to help me on my home repairs (which I still have many- so like you have unfinished business 😉 ) and enjoyed my time when I visited you in Charleston. You really was a great man! Thank you for all the good childhood memories (picking me up from school with a diarymen’s ice tea in hand and then playing volleyball with us in the pool) and then the ones we formed later on. I love you and miss you dearly! We’ll take care of Dad! Rest easy Uncle James and say hello to both Grandma’s for me!
