Obituary
James Whitsett was born on February 21, 1960 in Marion, Alabama to the late Andrew and Bessie Holifield Whitsett. James finished St. Joseph Catholic High School in Huntington, WV and continued his education where he followed his passion where he played basketball in college breaking state records and included in the West Virginia hall of fame.
James, always said his walk with the Lord is the most important force in his life, driving his passion for God-glorifying. By spending time in the Scriptures and in prayer, he strived to be obedient to the calling God has placed over his life.
He always enjoyed conversation, especially sports, and was an Marshall Thundering Herd fan. He truly enjoyed spending time with friends and families where he was a great storyteller, not leaving out any detail, and could make you laugh. He had a big personality with a kind heart and had a keen sense of justice. His generosity was contagious; he would literally take the coat off his back in the middle of winter and give it to a person in need.
James worked in hospitality management. He lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana from (2007 to 2012) for a short time and worked at Fairfield (Marriott). Later he moved back to Charleston, West Virginia where he worked at Holiday Inn Express.
James accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. James was under membership watch-care from 2007 to 2012 at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 2013, James attended Liberty Mission Baptist Church where his affliction remained until his departure.
James of Charleston, West Virginia, peacefully went with our Lord on October 26, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Whitsett and mother, Bessie Holifield Whitsett; eight brothers Dave (Ida), William (Faye), Willie B. (Ruby), Henry Whitsett (Fredie), Willie Lovelance “Joe” (Clara), John D. (Miltoria), Lee Andrew (Brenda), Arthur (Carolyn); four sisters Jane Goodgame (Willie), Mae Ella Wedgeworth (Robert), Ollie Bell Dobyne (Marvin) and Pearl Lee Harper (Stanley).

I was saddened to hear that James had died. We are going to miss him. He would periodically stop by my office and light up the office with his big smile and good humor. I loved to tease him about the fact that I outscored him career-wise during our respective bball careers at Huntington St. Joe by a whopping one point! I was so proud of the man of God he became. His story of redemption, and the wonderful relationship he and his mother maintained with Vicky and Don Baker was so inspiring that it made the magazine, Guideposts, many years ago. He was living proof that God loves us, despite our mess-ups, and that God used James to inspire others and give them hope! My deepest sympathy and prayers are with all the family and friends of James who loved him.
