Obituary

Johnnie Edward Slappe, 74, of Charleston, passed away on February 20, 2021. He passed away of natural causes after battling chronic medical conditions.

Johnnie was born and raised in Charleston to the late Earl and Margaret Slappe.

He was an extremely hard worker growing up. He was self-sufficient and perseverant. In 1964, at the age of 16, Johnnie joined the 970 Painters Union. Following his apprenticeship he married his wife of 55 years, Patricia Slappe. In the following years they raised two children. In 1980, Johnnie showing his work ethic started his own company, Slappe Painting, which later on was handed down to his son.

Johnnie was a fighter. He never backed down to anything that was thrown his way. He was a comic who loved to get a good laugh out of someone. He was an open book with endless stories. He was a true conversationalist at heart. Johnnie loved nothing more than being with a group of people and owning the room, but underneath it all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Richard and his wife, Ellen; and Jerry Slappe.

Johnnie is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, John Patrick (Susan) Slappe; daughter, Tawnie Slappe (Jeffrey) Carter; brother, Tommy (Patricia) Slappe; grandchildren, Kaitlin Carter, Dugan Slappe, Morgan Carter, Samantha Slappe and Sydney Carter.

A private family burial service will be held in the summer.
