Obituary

Lawrence Randall “Randy” Hay, 86, of Sissonville, WV went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 8th, 2022.

Those who knew Randy would say he was a Godly man. A man of service and friend to all.  A devout Christian, Randy was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a member of the Methodist Men. He was also a proud alumnus of Walton High School, class of 1953. Randy loved his Sissonville community.  He was a volunteer firefighter for the Sissonville Fire Department, a member of the Lion’s Club and an active volunteer at Sissonville High School.  Randy spent many hours shaping the lives of numerous young athletes for more than fifty years of volunteering his time and talents (including mowing many lawns) in the community. In the last few years, you could always find Randy with a smile on his face and a bag of candy at the scorer’s table of football, baseball, and basketball games at Sissonville High School.

Among his many accomplishments, Randy retired, after 25 years, from the Army National Guard as a Major in 1978. Randy also retired from a 42-year career at Union Carbide (Rhône Poulenc) in 1995. Randy loved working on the farm and tending his gardens.  He would often share what he had grown with friends and neighbors.

Randy is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lana; parents, Shirkey and Hattie Mangus Hay; child brothers, John and Wendell; brothers Paul and James “Jim” Hay, and sisters, Mary Hay Smith and Arnetta Hay Painter.  He is survived by his sister Rainelle Hay Painter of Sissonville.

To forever cherish the wonderful memories are his devoted son, Jonathan (Tammy) Hay, of Charlotte, NC; loving daughter Ann (Bill) Humphreys of Cross Lanes, WV; grandchildren Jacob Hay, Amber Hay, Allie (Shane) Jeffries, and Ben Humphreys; great grandsons Malakai and Barrett Jeffries.

A Memorial Service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Sissonville, WV on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 5 o’clock pm.  Pastor Danny Kinder will be officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Saturday mornings were spent on the farm for many years of Randy’s life.  Therefore, it is fitting that he will return to the farm on a Saturday morning. Interment of remains will be at the Hay Family Cemetery in Cicerone, WV.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, please make donations in Randy’s honor to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Hospice of Charleston, or the Sissonville High School Athletic Boosters.

I don’t think that God ever made a more thoughtful and kind man that Randy Hay. It has been a blessing to have known him and been a part of his and Lana’s lives at Aldersgate and Sissonville High School. My heart breaks for Ann and Jonathan and their families at this time. They are testaments to the decent and fine parents who reared them. My sympathies to all of you.

  2. Every once in a lifetime, God will send a good person to share a part of your life; sometimes, if you are lucky, a really, really special person will slip into your arena. In June, 1962, such a person joined me in OCS at Ft Geroge G. Meade, MD. That person was SSG Lawrence R. Hay. Randy and I were members of the 150th Armd Cav Rgt, WVARNG which had been called to active duty during the “Berlin Crisis” on Oct 15th, 1961. He was a member of How Btry, 2nd Sqdn, 150th ACR stationed in Spencer and I was a Med Aid Man with Regimental Hq and Hq Troop stationed in St Albans. The 150th had units in 20 cities in WV and had approximately 2,300 troops. Due to the loss of many officers who remained on Active Duty with the Army, all Mobilized ARNG units were facing a need for new Lieutenants; thus a new OCS class was created. Randy and I were a part of the 150th new class which started with some 65 members. It was not long before Randy and I met and began a life long friendship. But, I digress. Randy and I served in different units after our return from the Mobilization; however we continued our friendship to this day. He retired after 25 years of service in order to spend time with his children as they progressed thru school and school activities. He attained the rank of Major; however he would have easily been promoted to LTC (Lieutenant Colonel) should he have remained in the Guard. Again, his goal was to serve for 25 years and devote the rest of his life to being a father to his children and husband to Lana. A man of principle, honor and high standards. I am proud to call Randy Hay my friend an will never forget him May God be with his family and may they always remember the character of the man they call Dad and Grand Dad. LTC (Ret) Noble Wayne Lanham, Poca WV.

  4. I have so many fond memories from my younger years growing up at the baseball field watching my two brothers play baseball. The thing I remember most of your dad was his kind manner and his smile. Your dad was a true blessing to many. Sissonville has lost one of its Best! I am sorry for your loss.

  5. We are so sorry for your loss. Your family will be in our prayers.
