Obituary

On November 24th, 2023, Nancy Hewitt Bird, 76, of Charleston, WV, set sail on a new adventure to find those that left before her. She died peacefully after complications following surgery for ovarian cancer. She fought a hard, steep battle at the end with stoicism, dignity, and grace.

She was in the first graduating class of George Washington High School in 1965. She attended Fashion School in NYC and Virginia Wesleyan University as an honor student. She lived a colorful and abundant life with many close friends and adventures. Stories of her time in NYC are filled with whim and excitement and tales of socializing with the likes of Steve Miller and Janis Joplin. Nancy, ever the red-head was heralded to be a unique and vibrant individual. Her flair and style led her to some interesting and successful jobs in the fashion industry as a buyer, retail store owner, and then a career in marketing and management. Her last few working years were with the Girls Scouts of America. She is known by many for being a very talented lady with great style and a quick wit. Her stories, friendship and devotion to her mother in the later years of her life are something to be honored and respected.

She was predeceased by her father Robert Lee Bird, mother Ann Embleton Bird, and brother David “Chip” Bird.

Nancy has one living sister, cousin Ann Carney Southworth, and her red-headed dog ZIGGY who now lives happily on the farm of Nancy’s life-long friend, Tony Shepherd.

Suggestions for donations in memory of Nancy can be made to Manna Meal of Charleston WV, St. Johns Episcopal Church in Charleston WV, The Covenant House in Charleston WV, or a charity of your choice.

  1. Mary L. says:

Nancy was a sister to many — always with truth, humor, warmth and wisdom. She’s the best! We’ll gladden our hearts by thinking of her until we meet again. You left us too soon, but sail on, sister!

  2. Tony and all of Nancy’s Loved Ones: My wife, Harriett, and I are saddened by Nancy’s passing. She was always so nice to both of us, during our “growing up” years. We knew she was very talented, but we didn’t know all of the neat things she did in her life. She will be missed. We will keep you in our prayers. GOD bless, Sparky and Harriett Adams
