Obituary

Rachel Ohana Ruben, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away on October 31, 2023. She was 94 years old.

Rachel immigrated to the U.S.A. from Casablanca, Morocco, in 1954. Soon after arriving in this country, circumstances brought Rachel to Charleston, WV, where she was destined to meet and marry Carl Ruben. They were blessed with three children and had a long and happy marriage.

Rachel is survived by daughters Lisa Walden and Elizabeth Friedman (Robert); grandchildren, Ilanna Garzon (Phillip), Eric Walden, and Lauren Friedman, and great-grandchildren, Ari Garzon, Mia Garzon, and Eliza Garzon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Ruben, and son, Max Ruben.

Rachel, a pillar in the Jewish community, was renowned for her refined French-Moroccan cuisine. Her unique artistry with food afforded her the opportunity to cater events for prominent politicians, large corporations, religious leaders and entertainers.

Rachel was widely recognized and loved for her warmth, generosity and unmatched hospitality. She was a Woman of Valor – an inspiration with style and grace and selfless love shown through so many aspects of her life.

It would not be an overstatement to say that we have lost a national treasure.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2023, at B’nai Jacob Eternal Home Cemetery, Charleston, WV, with Rabbi Victor Urecki officiating.
