Obituary
Richard Austin Sutler, 86, of Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2024, in Charleston.
Son of Janie Marie Moir Sutler and Robert Graves “Bud” Sutler, he was born April 24, 1937, in Charleston and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, Class of 1957.
Preceding him to heaven was his mother and father, and his brothers, Gordon and Robert “Bob.”
Dick was affectionately known by several nicknames throughout his life, including “Dickie” and “Peach,” but was known to many as “Papaw.” After attending West Virginia State College, Dick worked in the family business, J.M. Sutler Company, for 45 plus years. Upon retirement, he loved to travel to see family, especially those that lived close to the beach! Dick was passionate about supporting sports of all sorts, including leading the Charleston Western Baseball organization as president, Midwestern midget league football as president, coaching Bream Presbyterian basketball and softball teams, and running the Bream Christmas youth basketball tournament. Dick was a deeply beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He was a lifelong member of Bream Presbyterian Church, where he served in the church in various capacities for decades.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilynn Louise Greife Sutler; his children, Kimberly Sutler (John Hodges), Richard Kendall Sutler (Beth), and J. R. Sutler (Denise); eight grandchildren, Drew (Summer), Austin (Lindsay), Ashley, Alexander (Aimee), Emily, Daniel, Jacob and Sam; four great-grandchildren, Brady, Madeline, Maxwell and Miles, and brother-in-law, David Greife (Debbie).
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in the name of Richard Sutler to Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 6127, Charleston, WV 25362) and Hubbard Hospice House (1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311).
