Obituary

Robert “Bob” DeVere of Charleston, WV, passed on from his earthly life on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

Bob was born on August 13, 1944, in Columbus, OH. In his early life, his family moved to Parkersburg, WV, and then to Charleston, WV. Bob graduated from Charleston High School and later went on to receive multiple advanced degrees through Morris Harvey (University of Charleston). He was employed by the Kroger Company for fifty years. Bob proudly served his country as a combat engineer in the US Army National Guard from 1966-1974. He volunteered his time to teach science classes at local schools, aerospace education for the Civil Air Patrol, and devoted many years helping his wife advocate for domestic violence victims.

He was preceded in death by his soulmate and loving wife of forty-four years, Carol DeVere (died 2009).

Bob is survived by his son, Ben DeVere (Carrie), his grandchildren, Joey, Chris, and Abrielle, and great-grandchild, Blake. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Kathy Keller, the families of Jerry (Laurie) Casey, Amanda (Steve) Holland, Mike (Lisa) Casey, Nick (Allison) Keller, brothers, Jim and Mike DeVere, and sister, Linda Cain.

Bob loved classical music and chess. He had an appetite for learning that could never be satisfied, and was always on a quest for knowledge. He was a seeker, inventor, and a tremendous problem solver. He was always willing to help someone figure it out. Bob was selfless and was devoted to his family. The door of his home was always open when shelter, hope, inspiration, guidance and love was needed by others. He constantly gave of himself to his loved ones.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date to honor and celebrate Bob’s life.

A donation in Bob’s honor to the Civil Air Patrol (www.gocivilairpatrol.com) can be made in lieu of flowers.

God Bless Bob DeVere ! I first met Bob at the Old Kroger Store in South Hills which became Fruth Farmacy . It was back in the late 1970’s and there was a massive snow storm and I had to walk from the East End to South Hills. I was freezing for sure and went into Kroger and I first met Bob back in Produce. We chatted and he gave me produce aprons to wrap around my neck , head and upper body and I trudged on and made it home reinspired by his concern and kindness. From that point , I always made it a point to say hello and discuss produce with him. Over the years , we enjoyed a kind and mutual respect and did what produce business Kroger would allow us as a local produce vendor when the warehouse was short on product. He was a very good man and a dedicated professional and many prayers for Bob, All Family and Many Loved Ones.

With Admiration, Great Respect, and Deepest Sympathy,
    Bob Corey
