Obituary

Robert george chenoweth, jr. 89, died early sunday morning, december 18, 2016 at
hubbard hospice house, charleston, wv following complications from a stroke he sustained 11 days before.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, irene and robert sr., his sister, betty chenoweth mickle hills and grandchild, tracy todd chenoweth.
Bob was born august 16, 1927 in marion, indiana, to the late robert george chenoweth, sr. And irene sheldmeyer chenoweth. Like many during those years, his family struggled and it left him with a determination to succeed. He delivered papers for the marion chronicle while going to school and, after graduation, joined the navy in 1945 at the age of 17. Japan surrendered the day he enlisted so he was fond of saying, “chenoweth has enlisted ““ we give up!” after serving 8 months on the uss princeton aircraft carrier as a radio man, he was honorably discharged. He then returned to indiana and continued to work at the chronicle with his best friend from childhood, garl carmichael, who remains his dear friend today.
He married marjorie ann land on december 23, 1949, and soon relocated to atlanta, georgia to attend george institute of technology. After graduating with honors in chemical engineering, he joined union carbide in 1953 and move to charleston, wv. Bob moved rapidly through the ranks of uc, transferring with each promotion to italy, texas, louisiana, back to charleston and finally to newtown, ct, where he retired as corporate vice-president of uc in 1986. He was devoted to union carbide and received numerous awards including the outstanding leadership for management and sciences award in 1981 from the american society of mechanical engineers for his work regarding the building of the corporate headquarters that was being relocated from nyc to danbury, ct.
After retirement bob was president of the union carbide retiree corps and worked for many years to help fellow retirees receive the benefits they were due.
He lived a very full life, traveled the world, met many people and made many friends. He enjoyed retelling stories he had collected throughout his life as well as many passages of poetry he had memorized.
For many years, he and marjorie were square dancers and he always loved shooting pool. But what he loved the most was building or, as he called it, “pounding nails.” he was a skilled woodworker and every house he and margie lived in benefited from his skill and passion.
He was the sun in our family, and we were the satellites. His presence demanded attention. He was the one you wanted in your corner because he was a problem solver. He touched many lives and he will be greatly missed.
Robert is survived by his wife of 67 years, margie; #1 son, steven dale chenoweth and his wife, nancy, # 2 son, james robert chenoweth and his wife, angela; # 1 daughter, carole irene shinn and her husband, james and # 2 daughter, leesa jane chenoweth. (dad liked to introduce us that way).
Grandchildren, gary robert chenoweth, christopher lawrence chenoweth, corey ann woody, caitlin workman disher and her husband carl, franz s. Workman, iv and his wife, michelle, emily workman white and her husband, joey and james robert chenoweth, jr.; special niece, annette mickel flores and several great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life and gathering of friends will begin at 4:00 p.M. Friday, december 23, 2016 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston, wv.
