Obituary
Robert House Daley, Jr., of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2024, surrounded by family, at the Hubbard Hospice House following an extended illness. He was 90 years old.
Bob was born in Huntington on December 10, 1933, to Robert H. and Mary Moore Love Daley.
He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1956, with a master’s degree in architecture. He also received a commission as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during his studies at VPI.
Bob began his career as an architect for I.M. Pei in New York City before returning to Charleston to work with his father at the firm of Greife, Hoblitzell, and Daley. He went on to serve as a managing partner of Hoblitzell, Daley, and McIntyre, which later became HDMR Group. The firms designed buildings throughout the state, including structures on the campuses of West Virginia University and Marshall University.
While a student at Charleston High School, Bob met Joann Bryant. The pair dated in college and were wed on December 22, 1956, at the Baptist Temple in Charleston. They were married for 67 wonderful years and had four children: Bob III, Nathan, Elizabeth, and William.
Bob lived a full and wonderful life with Joann. The pair made trips to Europe and several cross-country journeys across America. The couple enjoyed time with family, especially during summers at Newburyport, MA, their second residence following retirement. Bob and Joann also spent much time at the Homer Smith farm in Braxton County and frequently vacationed at Myrtle Beach, SC, where Bob’s parents retired.
He had many long friendships, especially in his neighborhood on Deming Drive in Charleston, where he and Joann spent more than 30 years. His neighbors were more like an extended family than mere friends. They enriched the couple’s lives greatly.
Bob raised and took loving care of many dogs. These pups brought him much joy and sunshine. He also enjoyed hiking, canoeing, fishing, and family reunions. He was a lifelong enthusiast of remote-control airplanes.
He is survived by his wife, Joann Bryant Daley; their four children, Bob III of Varnville, SC, Nathan B. Daley and his wife Susan Kraft Daley of Wake Forest, NC, Elizabeth Daley Sceery and her husband W. Mark Sceery of Newburyport, MA, and William S. Daley and his wife Anna Creel Payne of New York, NY; grandchildren: Christopher Ryan Daley (Ting-An Liu), R. Alexander Sceery, Joseph Daley Sceery, and Mary Allison Daley; great-grandson Eli Pan Daley.
Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Cline of Bradenton, FL. He is survived by his sister, Cynthia Moser of Hendersonville, NC.
