Obituary

Roland f. Hart jr. Passed away on monday, december 10, 2018,  with his sons at his side, at kanawha place in charleston, w.Va., after a long illness.
Roland was born in charleston july 29, 1933, to the late roland f. Hart sr. And gertrude leora (ora) hart. He initially lived in south charleston, w.Va., but moved when he was young to charleston’s west side, where he attended st. Anthony catholic church and grade school, with his parents and his older siblings, robert and faye.
Roland graduated from charleston catholic high school in 1951, where he played football, baseball and basketball. Roland joined his brother, robert, at the university of notre dame and graduated in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a minor in english. He had a particular interest in criminology.
Roland joined the united states navy in 1955 and served in the post office aboard the uss monrovia as a 3rd class petty officer / teleman. His ship was involved in the cyprus crisis in the eastern mediterranean sea. He later served as a decoder in new york city before his honorable discharge in 1957.
After the service, roland joined the traveler’s insurance company as an insurance adjuster in 1957. His initial assignment was in wheeling, w.Va. He later transferred to princeton, w.Va., and finally to charleston in 1972. Roland worked for travelers, cna, call adjusting and aetna, retiring in 1997. He later did some consulting work.
In 1960, roland married mary agnes jelich. Mary and roland had four boys, bret, roland iii, walter and shawn. Roland iii died as an infant. Roland and mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010. Mary passed away in 2015 after 54 years of marriage.
Roland had a passion for hunting and fishing with his family and loved going to the family farm in ritchie county. He loved rabbit hunting with his pet beagles that were part of the family. He was an avid gardener and liked to go camping. He also enjoyed watching sports, and always attended his boys’ sporting events through their school years.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, mary jelich hart; and his son, roland f. Hart iii. He is survived by his three sons and their children: bret a. Hart of charleston, his wife martina and their sons patrick, gregory, thomas and christoph; walter m. Hart of brenham, texas, his wife tina, their daughter mary katherine and their son sean; shawn s. Hart of parkersburg, w.Va., and his daughters michelle and taylor, with great – granddaughter, lotus marie janssen. Roland is also survived by his sister, faye h. King of columbus, ohio, and his brother, robert a. Hart of houston, texas.
Mass of christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.M. On saturday, december 15, at the basilica of the co – cathedral of the sacred heart in charleston, w.Va., with very reverend donald x. Higgs officiating. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.M., with visitation at 10 a.M., both in the gathering space of the church.

    Dear Bret, Martina And Family: Although We Did Not Meet Roland, We Feel We Have Been Very Close To Him Through His Wife Mary And Through All Of You, And We Have Accompanied Him These Last Years With Our Prayers. Our Thoughts Are With You As You Mourn His Loss. We Know That Mary Agnes, Whom We All Loved So Much, Has Welcomed Him In Heaven.     The Obituary For Roland Hart Was A Fitting Tribute To A Man Who Served His Country Honorably And Accomplished Much. I Believe We Are Known Best At Our Passing By Those We Leave Behind In Our Family Tree. I Never Met Roland, But I Know Bret And His Sons And They Are All Fantastic People That I’M Proud To Know. I Believe They Are A Product Of Roland’S Work Ethic, Strong And Loving Family Foundation, And Guidance. My Prayers And Kindest Thoughts Are With Roland’S Family As You Try To Find Peace Following His Loss.
