Obituary

Ronald david chaffin ~ also known as husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa ~received a call he couldn’t refuse on sunday, march 18, 2018, at the young age of 77.
Dad was born in detroit, mi on june 7, 1940, to vestal and willie chaffin. When he was16 the family landed in charleston where dad found himself playing basketball and belting out tunes on the trombone in the marching band at stonewall jackson high school. After graduating from high school he continued his short basketball career at florida college in temple terrace, fl. After college graduation he returned to charleston and married rosemarie fouts in 1960.
For our entire lives dad was a minister with the church of christ. We moved around quite a bit, including several years in south africa, as dad spread the good news. He also had a tenure with the post office, retiring as the nitro postmaster. Dad enjoyed woodworking, sleeping through sunday afternoon football, a nightly snack of popcorn, sightseeing and hunting. Most of us appreciated his hunting skills as they never resulted in him bringing home a deer!
Family was important to dad.   before his first wife and our mom, rosemarie, passed she was the main ringleader of family get-togethers.  dad was sure to be at these family events, usually making home-made ice cream.
He is survived by his wife, carole;  us kids, kimberly, tanya and jamie, all in the charleston area, jonathan (lisa) of jasper, al, pamela (john) of lagrange, ky, and  nathan (alesa) of lexington, va.  he is also survived by 15 grandkids and 3 great-grandkids, two sisters, carolyn linville and kathy paschall, along with a brother, larry chaffin. Additionally, he leaves behind 5 step-children, 15 step-grandkids and 2 step great-grandkids. Try finding a place for all of us to get together at one time!
Please join us to celebrate a life well-lived on saturday, march 24, 2018, at barlow- bonsall funeral home in charleston.  friends are welcome to visit starting at 11 am with funeral service beginning at 1 pm., marc gibson will be officiating.
