Obituary
Ruby Fulmer Sloan Hope, 91, of Culloden, WV, formerly of Cottage Grove, TN, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV, after a long illness.
She was born in Augusta, GA, and regularly said “but I moved to South Carolina as soon as I heard about it.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, The Rev. Dr. John Benson Sloan and Ruby Fulmer Sloan. She was also was preceded in death by her sister, Joanna Sloan Kemp in 2019. In 2019, she was widowed with the death of her beloved spouse, The Rev. Mr. Tyson L. Hope.
Mrs. Hope attended Holton-Arms School in Washington, DC, and Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College). She was a big personality, an avid reader, writer, story-teller, painter and boldly shared the joy of performance, having performed and sung with the Charleston Light Opera Guild, The Aracoma Story in Logan, numerous church choirs and as a “young single girl living in Atlanta,” the Symphony Chorus.
The Hopes served Presbyterian churches in Belle, DuPont City and Logan in WV. Mrs. Hope was a commissioned Lay Minister and also regularly filled pulpits in the area including at Eleanor Presbyterian Church. The Hopes were also called to churches in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee. They returned to West Virginia in 2000 to be near their grandchildren in retirement.
Mrs. Hope is survived by her children, Willa Hope Farley of Culloden, John Benson (JoBe) Sloan Hope and wife Kellie of Culloden, and Emily Hope Stigall of Eleanor. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren and their spouses, Olivia Hayes and Husband Benjamin of Point Pleasant, Ian Hope and wife Sarah Carson of East Point, Georgia and John Tyson (J.T) Hope and wife Tori Ramey of Barboursville. Also surviving are her two great- grandchildren, Dean Hayes and Parker Hope, as well as nieces on both sides of the family, and beloved family friend, Andrew Rhodes.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 3, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church in Charleston. Service will be performed by the Rev. Dr. William Myers.
Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mrs. Hope’s memory to the Hospice of Huntington, 1101 Sixth Avenue, Huntington WV 25701 or The Charleston Light Opera Guild, 411 Tennessee Avenue, Charleston, WV 25301.
