Ruth was a graduate of the Boston Academy of Notre Dame in 1950 and graduated in 1954, cum laude, from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA.

Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph L. Mullen, in 2006; her eldest son, Jay, in 2016; and her only sibling, Dr. Paul McBride, in 1988.

Ruth was an active member of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. She was a Eucharistic Minister for many years, serving both the Church and the homebound.
