Obituary
Sam silverstein jr. 93, of charleston, passed quietly in his sleep at hubbard hospice house while surrounded by his family on march 26 th, 2017. Sam is survived by his wife of 10 years, phyllis, two children, sam silverstein iii (dora) of charleston, mary hamilton (tim) of boca raton, fl. Grandchildren, taylor (inna), megan and meredith, nicole and samara. He was also preceded in death by his brother robert, and first wife sara.
Sam was a kind and loving son, husband, brother, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His personal generosity was exceeded only by his saucy and witty sense of humor. A lifelong charleston resident, sam’s interests included tennis, golf, swimming, and constantly working to make his yard “weed free”.
Sam’s educational stories started at lincoln jr high where he excelled in academics and mischievousness. True to form, this trend continued thru military school(s), and washington and lee college. After serving his country in the air force during wwii, sam finished school at w & l where he earned his law degree, then 1 year of post graduate education in switzerland studying international law. After returning to charleston where he briefly practiced law, he then joined the family business that he would eventually build into a fortune 500 company, before his semi retirement while in his early 80’s.
Throughout his life long residency in charleston, sam was active in multiple community activities and leadership positions on local boards, including the national bank of commerce, junior achievement, the import export council, temple israel, and the united way, to name a few.
Our family would like to give special thanks to all the staff at hospice house for their compassion and care, as well as the many caregivers he had while at home during his long illness.
Visitation will be from 11am to 12:30 pm on tuesday, march 28 at temple b’nai israel in charleston. Funeral services will immediately follow visitation, with internment at spring hill cemetery in charleston. The family will then welcome family and friends for a reception from 5 to 7 pm at their home in kanawha city.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to: temple israel, 2312 kanawha blvd e, charleston, wv 25311 and/or kanawha hospice care, 1606 kanawha blvd w, charleston, wv 25387 or your favorite charity of choice.
