Obituary
Sandra Ann Parker, a beloved figure in the Beckley community and a passionate advocate for the arts and animals, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the age of 73.
Born in Beckley, WV, Sandi (to all who knew her) – was a vibrant soul who brought joy to everyone around her. She attended Central Elementary and Woodrow Wilson High School, where her love for dance and theatre blossomed. From her early years, she pursued dance lessons, eventually cast as a dancer in “Honey in the Rock,” the long running outdoor theater production at Grandview State Park.
After graduating from high school, Sandra attended West Virginia University, majoring in theater. Following her graduation, she moved to New York City, where she worked in the personnel department for Mitsubishi Corporation on Park Avenue. Though her career took her to the bustling streets of Manhattan, her heart remained rooted at home in West Virginia.
Upon returning home, Sandi joined Eastern Coal Corporation as a public relations representative, where she often took VIPs on tours of the company’s mines, sharing the region’s rich history and culture. Expanding on her love of WV with elements of nostalgia, reflecting on the stories and struggles of those who worked in such places; her journey continued at the West Virginia Children’s Museum in Beckley, where she served as Director for 23 years. Under her leadership, the museum flourished, merging with the City of Beckley and expanding its offerings to include the Underground Mine Tour, Coal Camp exhibit, The Mountain Homestead, and additional attractions. In 2001, her dedication to education and community service was recognized when she received the National Award for Museum Service.
After retiring, Sandra devoted her time to local causes, particularly advocating for stray cats and dogs. She embodied the spirit of giving, often quoting Eleanor Roosevelt: “Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.”
Sandra’s legacy of creativity, compassion, and commitment to her community will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She is survived by brother, Robert Parker II; uncle, Howard Koleman; cousin, Robert Bredlow; niece, Elizabeth Parker; nephew, Robbie Parker, and grand-nephew, Nicholas Hatcher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Monday, October 14, 2024, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Beckley, WV, where friends and family can gather to celebrate her life and the joy she brought to so many.
Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Laela’s Hope Cat Rescue at 1023 Woodlawn Avenue, Beckley, WV.
Condolences may be sent to Sandi’s family at www.barlowbonsall.com.
Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I am so sorry to hear about Sandy passing. Sandy and I worked together for the City of Beckley in New River Park. I was Director of the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine while she was Director for the Youth Museum of Southern WV. We worked very close together……even closer after the two facilities went under one umbrella with the city. Sandy had the most beautiful and contagious smile……she was always pleasant to be around with a heart to help those that needed her. We were always there for each other to lend a helping hand. . I will never forget her and will always cherish her friendship! She was a loving daughter and faithful caretaker to her dear mother. I will miss my friend knowing she has now departed from this earth. I will cherish and hold our friendship close in my heart…..until we meet again on the other side! I love you, Renda Morris
