Obituary

Sharon “Jane” Smith, age 78, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, died on September 6, 2022, while in the care of the health care professionals of Mayo Clinic, Methodist Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, in Rochester, Minnesota, with her daughter Liana and husband Joe present. Jane believes in the Communion of Saints and through God’s grace the forgiveness of sins; she looks forward to the resurrection of her body and life everlasting.

She met Joe on a blind date in 1962. She showered Joe with blessings through the Sacrament of Matrimony at Sacred Heart Church in Charleston, West Virginia, on May 31, 1966, for 56 years. They loved, worshiped, lived, played, camped, prayed and worked in Michigan for over 35 years; blessed with two daughters, Laura (Andrew) Parkin and Liana Smith, and proud grandparents of Douglas and Brandon Laird.

Jane, born on November 24, 1943, at her home in Walton, West Virginia, was Baptized, and received her first Reconciliation and first Holy Communion in 1966 in Huntington, West Virginia.

Joe and Jane were blessed by a Worldwide Marriage Encounter on January 18-20, 1985, in Jackson, Michigan.

Jane was an X-ray technician and then devoted her time and talents to raising her two daughters.

Jane’s parents, Bruce and Elizabeth (Arthur) Humphreys, and her brother, Bill, predeceased her. Her sisters, Evelyn McCarty of Carlisle, Kentucky, and Patricia (Fred) Elswick of Charleston, West Virginia; her brother, Bob Humphreys of Hurricane, West Virginia, and many nieces and nephews survive.

A member of St. Albert the Great Newman Parish, Jane is thankful for the priests and parishioners that have supported her.

The Very Reverend Donald X. Higgs will officiate the Vigil at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, West Virginia, sometime between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 9, 2022, and the Funeral Mass at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022. There will be a Rite of Committal in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Charleston, in the open-air chapel immediately following the Funeral Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Department of Development for Palliative Care – Rochester, 200 1st Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905 or St. Albert the Great Newman Center, 2615 S Solano Drive, Las Cruces, NM 88001.
