Obituary

Sheila Jo “Sugie” Coughlin, 69, of Charleston, WV, passed away on August 1, 2025, at her home.

She was born on August 26, 1955, at the Spring Dale, WV, home of her parents, John Alvin Coughlin and Elizabeth Helen (Adams) Coughlin.

Sheila earned her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Charleston. She worked as an Appointed Counsel Services Coordinator at Public Defender Services.

Sheila will be remembered for her kind, sweet nature and her love of butterflies and nature. She was a loving mother, sister and aunt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Helen Marie Brunell, Charles Alvin Coughlin, Earl Campbell Coughlin, ad Michael Todd Coughlin; niece, Vanessa Lynn Brunell; and two very special companions, black labs Snoop and Sassy.

Sheila is survived by her loving son, Jason Wayne Coughlin, aka Bird, (Tara L.) of Kenna, WV; siblings, Virginia Ann “Sissy” Montanez of Yukon, OK, Henry Lawrence Coughlin (Pam) of Las Vegas, NV, Robert Greg “Piddley” Coughlin (Susan) of Lexington, SC, Marcha Faye “Tiny” Hall (Wayne) of Temecula, CA, Stephen Paul ”Pud” Coughlin of Dawson, WV, Valerie Jane “Honeybun” Poe of Charleston, John Patrick “Johnny P not from Tennessee” Coughlin of Dawson, WV: and beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sheila’s neph
ew, John “Buddy” Poe, for his kindness and companionship to Sheila. She enjoyed the time he spent with her talking, laughing and watching television.

The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Valerie “Honeybun” Poe for helping take Sheila to her doctor’s appointments and always being available for hospital stays.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on August 14, 2025, at Starcher Baptist Church in North Charleston, WV, with a reception to follow. Pastor Dave Workman will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) in honor of Sheila’s memory or make a donation to her Estate.
