Obituary

Shirley Marie Richey, 82, of Charleston,  WV, passed away March 14, 2026, at CAMC General Hospital surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born December 17, 1943, in Jordan Creek, WV, to loving parents Earl and Myrtle (Johnson) Allen. She worked as a nurse aide for CAMC Memorial until she married and went on to earn her GED. Shirley was a giving person throughout her entire life. She volunteered countless hours helping her community and local schools. She won a Hometown Hero award at Valley Grove Elementary for such deeds. She was also a very talented quilt maker who enjoyed giving her quilts to many close friends and family members. She sold many others. Her quilts were a work of art. An employee of the cultural center contacted her in an effort to persuade her to place one of her quilts on display, but she turned them down.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Eloise Stricker, Lou Fouty, and Joyce Ellis; brother, Earl “Buck” Allen, and baby brother, Joseph.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Forrest Richey Jr.; daughters, Angie Wright and husband Tom of Sissonville, and Mary Jackman and husband Dan of Charleston; grandchildren, Allen Wright and wife Kayla of Sissonville and Elaina Hill and husband Hunter of Shrewsbury; sisters, Helen Cottrell of Campbell’s Creek, Sue Spalding of Cedar Grove, and Elizabeth Bradley of Elkview; and brothers, Ronald Allen of Calhoun County, Tom Allen and wife Ilene of Summersville, and Darrell Allen and wife Betty of Calhoun County.
