Obituary

Sidney lopinsky, 93, of charleston, died peacefully in his home on friday, september 30, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his parents david and mollie nearman lopinsky; brother, charles lopinsky; his wife, josephine lopinsky and his grandson, drew morton.
Sid grew up on laidley street in down town charleston, spent many of his childhood days playing basketball at the ymca, he graduated from charleston high in 1941 and served in the us navy air force as a pilot in wwii. After leaving the navy, sid attended west virginia university and graduated in 1948. Sid was a huge mountaineer fan; he attended football games in morgantown and supported the wvu alumni. Sid was a successful stock broker and spent 60 years in the brokerage business. He had many years of working in laidley tower, he had the most ethical routine that started with early work out at nautilus, then off to a busy day in the office, then ended each day with happy hour and a cigar.
Some of his favorite pass times were playing golf and cards at kanawha country club, summer golf vacations in myrtle beach and puerto rico and visiting his grandchildren in florida.
He served on the board of directors for b’nai jacob synagogue where he was a life time member. He was one of a kind, very giving, patient and kind. He was smart, witty and loyal; he was a complete gentle soul to the bitter end.
He will be greatly missed by his children and grandchildren.
Sid is survived by his children, pam guthrie and companion don winslow, leslie young and husband phil, and robert mayberry; grandchildren, alexa morton and jackson young; nephew david lopinsky and cousin, sherman nearman.
The family would like to send a heartfelt “thank you” to kanawha hospice care for all their help and dedication over the past few years. Plus a huge thank you to the awesome team of caregivers that helped make sid’s life, pain free and comfortable. Each one of you played a crucial role in maintaining sid’s life over the past 6 years, from cooking, cleaning, bathing, to mixing his drinks. He was treated like a king and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. He loved you all.
Funeral service will be 1 p.M., wednesday, october 5, 2016 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston with rabbi victor urecki officiating. Burial will follow at graceland memorial park, south charleston. Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers ““ donations may be made in memory of sid to: b’nai jacob synagogue, 1599 virginia st e, charleston, wv 25311 and/or kanawha hospice care, 1606 kanawha blvd., w., charleston, wv 25387.
