Obituary

Susan ellen hogue ward, 74, of charleston, died saturday, august 5, 2017, at camc general hospital after a short illness.

Ellen was the daughter of john syme hogue jr. And lucille ellen epling. She grew up in ridgeview, boone county, but was born in and lived in charleston most of her life. She attended marshall university and graduated from the university of charleston with a bachelor’s degree in social work. Ellen worked as a telephone operator for at&t for eight years, then at the mental health association in the greater kanawha valley for almost 30 years. She was the director of the association for most of that time.

Ellen was preceded in death by her son, burton clyde ward; her loving stepfather, robert bennett; and her former husband, william b. Ward jr.

Surviving are ellen’s daughter, rachel ward, of charleston; sister, lucille fuller, of charleston; nephew, robert fuller, and his wife, michelle, both of charleston; nephew, john fuller, and his partner, freddie rivera, both of florida; great-nephew, lee fuller, of huntington; and special friends, dorothy and william whitehurst, of south charleston.

The family would like to thank the charleston fire department for their kindness to the family and their efforts on ellen’s behalf.

The body will be cremated and there will be no formal service, per ellen’s wishes. Family and friends may attend a memorial luncheon at noon, august 18, at china buffet in kanawha city. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to hospicecare, 1606 kanawha blvd. W., charleston, wv 25387.
