Obituary

Susan “Sooze” Daugherty Lawrence, a beloved mother, devoted teacher, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and inspiration. A resident of Charleston, Susie was a beacon of joy and warmth to all who knew her.

Born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia, Susie was the daughter of Russell L. and Huldah Parrish Daugherty and the sister of David Black Daugherty, his wife Mary Lee and daughters Rebecca (Ron) Hess, Amy (JL) Irwin and the late Elizabeth Withrow. She grew up surrounded by lots of loving friends and family. Susie’s vibrant personality shone brightly during her years at Marshall University, where she was a spirited cheerleader and a proud sorority sister of the Tri Sigma house. It was at Marshall that she graduated with her teaching degree and met her former husband, Alex Lawrence, the father of her beloved daughter, Angi.

Susie’s greatest pride and joy was her daughter, Angi Lawrence, whom she often described as her greatest blessing in life. She would frequently say how lucky she was to have Angi as her daughter. Their extraordinary bond was a testament to the deep love and devotion they shared-a relationship that defined Susie’s life and brought her immeasurable happiness. Susie also leaves behind her beloved dog, Daisy, who was a constant companion and source of comfort in her later years.

For decades, Susie was an adored teacher at Piedmont Elementary. Her enthusiasm for teaching transcended the classroom walls, and her fellow teachers knew she would be a great fit for team 2 when she performed an amazing cartwheel on the first day. She quickly become the “Cheerleader of Piedmont,” inspiring both staff and children to perform their best.

Susie was a “kid” at heart – creative, energetic, and wholly committed to delivering the best education to each and every child who entered her classroom. Susie’s patience, dedication, infectious smile made her a favorite among students, colleagues and parents alike. The lives she touched during her teaching career are countless, with former students often sharing how Mrs. Lawrence had shaped their love of learning and belief in themselves.

Outside the classroom, Susie was a playful flirt who loved a party. If there wasn’t one, she would bring the party to you. She also was a proud member of her Bridge Club, where she shared countless laughs and memories with her wonderful group of friends. Susie had a unique way of making people feel special, often greeting them with a song or an affectionate nickname by adding “Poo” to their names- “Sherry Poo” or Marty Poo”- a quirk that endeared her to everyone in her circle.

Susie lived a life full of love and gratitude. She often reflected on how fortunate she felt to have lived such a fulfilling life, surrounded by family, friends, and the joy of teaching. Her kindness, humor, and unwavering positivity continued to be a source of light and inspiration for everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Though Susie will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, the lessons she imparted, and the love she shared so freely. Her memory will forever remain a blessing to her daughter Angi, her beloved Daisy and all who were fortunate enough to call her a friend, teacher, or family.

The Piedmont staff and those already gone from us are surely welcoming her now, as Susie-the vibrant, fun loving and high energy girl- bounces around the Pearly Gates with the same enthusiasm she brought to every day of her earthly life.

A very special Thank You to all the nurses at the CAMC Memorial Hospital Hospice, Riverside Nursing home, Rachel Bailey Trout and Dr. Jennifer Hadley for your kindness and help during this transition.

A celebration of Susie’s life will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, located at 1118 Virginia Street, East, Charleston, WV 25301.

  1. Sending love and deep condolences to Angi, Daisy, and the Piedmont Staff for the loss of Susie. I was so grateful to have known her during my 8 years at Piedmont. She will be missed and always remembered for her exuberant smile and love of people and children.

  2. I am so sorry to hear of Susie’s passing. I worked at Ruffner with Susie when she taught first grade and I was teaching kindergarten. I always admired her energy level and creativity. Susie was also a friend of my neighbor Joanne Crozier. I am praying for comfort for Susie’s family and her dog Daisy as they grieve.
    Sincerely, Nancy

So sorry to hear about Susie’s passing. She was a dear friend of my sisters and I was the flower girl when she married Alex. She always wore a smile and the room became brighter when she walked in. So sorry that I haven’t seen her since her brother’s service. Prayers to her loving family
