Obituary

Susan Stiles Sibley, 82, of Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, while recovering from an emergency surgery she had undergone the week before. Born on June 10, 1943, in Shreveport, LA, Susan was a daughter, wife, mother and artist.

Married to Charleston area orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Richard H. Sibley (deceased in 2018) for 55 years, Susan was raised in a military family stationed around the United States until her family settled in Nashville, TN, where she played high school basketball, and then attended Vanderbilt University, where her father taught mathematics. Susan taught high school English in Morgantown, WV, before starting a family. Susan valued education, was an avid reader, and active in her church Sunday school class.

She started painting as an adult and specialized in watercolors of lush floral and still life scenes. She painted daily for decades. Her remaining work will be available in an online auction at a later date.

Susan is survived by daughters Laura Sibley of Petaluma, CA, and Allison Sibley, along with her family William Luck, and their children, Ava, Lawrence and Theo, all of Washington, DC, sister-in-law Sally Atkins and her husband, the late Steve Atkins, of Charleston, WV, and their son Bradley Atkins with wife Kelley and their children Stella and Liam of Hurricane, WV.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston, WV, in the main sanctuary, with Rev. Bill Myers officiating. Immediately following, Susan will be laid to rest at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, WV.

Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church in the Ruffner Room.
