Obituary

Teresa Jane “Tess” Cunningham, 79, of South Charleston, WV, passed away November 5, 2023, at Hubbard Hospice House-West, South Charleston.

She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine Day. A 1961 graduate of Charleston High School, she later became the administrative assistant to University of Charleston’s Vice-President of Advancement and CAMC Foundation’s President, with retirement in between.

For more than 20 years, Tess showed American Saddlebred horses, an activity she enjoyed sharing with her husband, Bill, and friends at Meadow Dream Farms in Nitro, WV. She and Bill traveled to several states, where she won several ribbons and trophies, with her last showing at Kansas City, MO, where she was a ribbon winner.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Cunningham; daughter, Kelly Porter (Rick); step-daughter, Kay Porras (Joe); step-son, Brent Cunningham (Jane); sisters, Joanne Springer, Nancy Davis and Deborah Coffman; brother, Robert Day, along with three granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Hubbard Hospice House-West and to all the people who cared for Tess.

Memorial service will be held at a later date.

  2. I am so sorry to hear about this! Tess was such a sweet lady, always wearing a smile. She is the one who encouraged me to pursue my job at UC! My dad worked with her and always called her "Tessy Poo" and she would just smile bigger when he called her that. I also enjoyed showing horses with her! She was such a light in this world and she will be missed by many!!

    I'm so sorry to hear of Tess' passing. I have fond memories of our times spent at horse shows where we shared lots of laughs and our mutual love for beautiful, high-headed Saddlebreds. Sending warm thoughts to Bill and the family.
