Obituary
Theodore a. Platz jr., age 90, died after a brief illness on wednesday, february 28, 2018 at his residence in the arthur b. Hodges center at edgewood summit. He was born may 6, 1927, was raised in great neck, ny, and graduated in 1947 from dartmouth college, hanover, nh, with a mechanical engineering degree from the thayer school of engineering. He later received an mba from new york university.
He earned his air force pilot wings in 1952, and then flew lockheed f-80 shooting stars, america’s first operational jet fighter, in the korean war, where he was awarded the distinguished flying cross and air medal. He returned to the states and served for three years in texas as a jet instructor pilot.
He began his banking career with chase manhattan bank in new york and later came to west virginia to become president of charleston national bank and, later, vice chairman of key centurion bancshares, inc. He served on numerous boards of directors, including camc, university of charleston, renaissance corporation and the charleston chamber of commerce.
He was the author of numerous newspaper articles and of the book “banking”, published by barron’s in 1991. In 1992, he founded topnet, an association of independent west virginia bankers, which he managed through 2011.
He is survived by his wife, joan, by four children, kevin, of cologne, germany, ted, of newport, ri, cynthia and her husband chuck topp, of charleston, and by stephen and his wife, melissa doty, both of charleston, and his grandchildren graham, mary catherine, elizabeth and ronald.
He is predeceased by his parents, theodore a. Platz and dorothea wolfe platz, of new york, and his sister, cynthia henriksen, of williamsburg, va.
The platz family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the arthur b. Hodges center and to all of edgewood summit, and to the hospice of charleston, for their care of ted in his final days and years.
Funeral service will be 11 a.M. Tuesday, march 6, 2018 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston with rev. Father brian j. Crenwelge officiating. Burial will follow at mount olivet catholic cemetery, charleston. Visitation and reception will be from 5 to 7 pm monday, march 5, 2018 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers “ donations may be sent in memory of theodore to: the foundation for peripheral neuropathy, 485 half day road, suite 350, buffalo grove, il 60089.

Dear Joan: I Am Very Sorry About Ted’S Passing And Your Loss. I Was Very Fond Of Ted As I Am About You. I Remember So Well Ted Encouraging Me To Make A Talk To The Rotary Club When I Retired From Union Carbide 31 Years Ago. Ted And I Worked Closely Together On The Camc Board And Then You And I Worked So Well Together At Nics 1987-90.
