Obituary

Thomas Allen Crutchfield, 90, of Charleston, WV, passed away at home on January 7, 2024, surrounded by family. Tom fought the good fight and now is happily out of the physical pain of living and entering the rewards of his faithful life.

Tom was born in 1933 to parents James Frank and Ida (Stockert) Crutchfield in Charleston. After graduating from Charleston High School in 1951, he attended Staunton Military Academy. He began his college career at West Virginia University for one year before completing his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Morris Harvey College in 1957.

He excelled at all things athletic and was most happy when playing football and basketball. He played varsity football at Morris Harvey College and was a proud member of the 1954 Cigar Bowl team.

Tom later earned his master’s degree in Public Administration at the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. After graduation, Tom began a 41-year career with the West Virginia Department of Highways as a Right of Way Agent, retiring well into his 70s.

He also excelled in his career with the West Virginia Army National Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 29 years of service. Tom was active on the Charleston Distance Run Committee for many years and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sons of Italy and the American Right of Way Association.

Tom married Amelia Pilato Crutchfield in 1961 and celebrated 62 years of marriage last fall. They were often seen together on a dance floor, participating in both country western and shag clubs. He enjoyed watching his sons, Berry and Todd, successfully manage their college, professional and personal successes. Tom was loved and admired by all his friends and family.

Tom was preceded in death by both of his parents and survived by his loving and faithful wife, Amelia; brother James “Jack” Crutchfield (Arlington, TX) and sons Berry Crutchfield and wife Sarah (Charleston, WV) and Todd Crutchfield and wife Barbara (Versailles, KY). He was proud of his five grandchildren: Katie, Thomas, Mary, Carly and Laura Crutchfield. He will be missed by all of his family and extended family, including many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

I knew Tom from having worked with him for years on the Charleston Distance Run. It was an honor to know him and treat to work with him. He was Reliable and funny, a quiet leader and steady presence. I hope your memories of Tom are as pleasant as mine are.

  4. Sending sympathy and healing prayers to you Amelia (M..) and to you both sons. Tom was a wonderful person, hard worker and most of all, a family man. He was to be admired for his values and his sense of humor. Among so many, Tom was rare and he’s left such a legacy. It was a priviledge to have known him. Godspeed.

  5. Steadfast and honest, sportsman and family man, Tom was respected by all who met him. His family and friends will miss this anchor of the community.
