Obituary

Thomas Charles Dooley, 86, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed peacefully in his sleep on April 10, 2026.

He was born September 28, 1939, in Charleston to loving parents Charles and Belva Dooley. A 1957 graduate of Matewan High School, Tom earned his MBA from Marshall University. Soon after graduation, he began his dedicated career in education at South Charleston Junior High School, then Charleston High School before becoming a loyal employee with the Kanawha County Board of Education. After many years, he returned to teaching and retired from Garnet Career Center.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Julius Butcher.

Tom is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Dooley; his sons, Tom Dooley Jr (Janice), Mark Dooley (Cathryn) and Greg Dooley (Amy), and grandchildren, David, Oliver, Emma and Evan.

Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing and adding to his many collections, especially his cone-top beer cans. He was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral.

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 17, 2026, at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, 190 Court Street, Charleston, with Father Alex Mackoul officiating. Immediately following, Tom will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.

Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.

    Sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. Tom and Mary were neighbors in the 70’s for our years in Charleston. Such great neighbers they were and never to be forgotten. Prayers for Mary to try to continue and may God bless her and the family moving forward, Tom lived a great life and his legacy lives on.
