Obituary

Thomas m. Wehner, 82, of charleston and formerly of chester, west virginia, died may 29th, 2016 at camc memorial hospital in charleston of complications following a heart attack.
A son of walter a. Wehner and marie (carraher) wehner, thomas was born on february, 28, 1934 in wellsville, ohio, but lived most of his life in chester, where he met his wife, virginia, when both were in primary school.   tom and virginia were married for over 50 years, and raised two children on the same block where tom grew up.  
tom served in the united states army as a radio operator on okinawa island.  he subsequently earned a b.A. At fordham university, which he attended on the g.I. Bill, and went on to obtain an m.A. In education from west virginia university.  tom was a secondary school history teacher and he later worked as a state government employee until his retirement. 
throughout his life tom maintained an interest in history, politics, and current events, and he was an avid reader until his final illness.  tom played high school football and played basketball during high school and college.  in retirement, he returned to his enjoyment of physical activity with the “5 a.M. Crew” at his local gym. He followed college football and basketball, and was a staunch supporter of the mountaineers and the notre dame fighting irish. 
tom was a lifelong member of the parish of sacred heart catholic church in chester, and was active in parish life.  he was a member of the chester lions club, where he served as a past president. 
tom enjoyed and took great pride in his family.  he shared his love of books, jokes, nature, and sports with his children while they were growing up, and later on with his grandson.  he had a gift for friendship and leaves a wide and varied circle of friends in chester, east liverpool, ohio, and at the charleston gardens retirement community in charleston, where he lived prior to his final illness.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, virginia (stoy) wehner of charleston.  he is also survived by his children, elizabeth wehner and her husband ken ward, jr. And their son, thomas, of charleston and patrick wehner, and his wife, dana walker, of philadelphia.  he is survived by his brothers, william a. Wehner of chester and dudley j. Wehner and his wife ann of warren, ohio.  he is also survived by his sisters, lois ann stoy of chicago and catherine mcintosh and her husband louis of glenmoor, ohio, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, tom is predeceased by his brothers, regis and jack wehner, and his sisters, margaret mary wehner, regina m. Wehner, martha l. Roetzel, bonevier nelson, and his twin, noreen mcpherson.   
tom’s family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at camc memorial hospital, and in particular the nursing staff of the cardiac i.C.U. And the surgical i.C.U. Units for their skilled and compassionate care for tom during his final illness.  additionally, the family thanks dr. Julie detemple and her staff, sam arco and his staff, and the staff of charleston gardens, especially dinace, carl, eric, and lisa.
A memorial mass will be held for tom at sacred heart catholic church in chester, at a date to be determined and he will be buried at columbiana county memorial gardens in east liverpool.
 in lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice in tom’s honor or memorial masses are requested by tom’s family.

    We Were So Sorry To Hear About Tom.We Have Such Great Memories Of Him Helping John Build Our House. He Was Always Ready To Help Anyone. He Always Amazed Us With His Knowledge Of History. He Will Certainly Be Missed By Many.You Are All In Our Thoughts And Prayers.
